Search for the perfect Linux distribution for my NotePad is over

Finally I found the perfect distribution for my Asus EeePC 1101HAB. Ubuntu 11.04 was performing kind of ok there, though a tad bit slow. But when I upgraded to 11.10, the hell broke loose. First, my NetBook won't boot to gnome 3, then I downgraded it to gnome 2, it would boot to text version where manually I had to start lightdm. Unity made it very slow and I started thinking of buying a new laptop. However, yesterday when I installed Ubuntu 11.10, to give a last try to Ubuntu 10.04LTS, things started working like a charm. Lucid is much faster and lighter desktop than later versions. I'll post the CPU and ram usage details in a day or two.

  1. Same issue here. I will test 1101HAB with Lucid Lynx tonight. Thanks for the tip.

    1. Hi Bruno:
I replaced Lucid with Snowlinux 3 Crystal because the support expired. Currently I am using Snowlinux 3 Crystal, which is Gnome 2 build on Linux 3 kernel and it gave me a fast and responsive system in my 1101HAB. Please try it out.
      Thanks,

  2. Hi
Kindly attempt on the following for better experience:

    1) Fedora KDE Spin
    2) Sabayon MATE Spin
    3) Manjaro XFCE

These three are really good on ASUS Machines
Further these three have updated application set and are more secure & stable compared with Debian/Ubuntu

    1. Hi VN,

Mint 13 XFCE works fantastic on Asus 1101HA netbook. On Manjaro being more secured than Ubuntu/Debian, I disagree. In fact Manjaro had a security breach recently, which of course got corrected. Linux is in general more secured than Windows. Manjaro and Sabayon being rolling releases will have cutting edge applications but the variety and stability is more for Debain/Ubuntu.

    2. Arindam Sen!
      Thanks for your reply

I am not clear whether Manjaro is secure and stabler than Ubuntu/Debian
But as an end user I can tell 100% that Sabayon, Fedora, ROSA Linux and like are better stable and secure than Ubuntu/Debian

I am happy to note that Mint 13 XFCE works well.
However I am happy with RPM or URPMI Releases than Debian or Ubuntu

    3. Hi VN:

Manjaro had some security bugs in 0.8.4 release but now has been corrected. It is now secure and stable. Also, my suggestion is to choose distros based on your liking and comfortability factor. In general, Ubuntu/Debian, Sabayon,Fedora, ROSA, PCLOS, Mint, etc., I found all of them to be very secured. If you are comfortable with RHEL/Mandriva based distros, please continue using it.

      Arindam
